How Whop handles sales tax, GST, and VAT
Whop acts as the Merchant of Record (MoR) and Deemed Supplier for all Whop Payments transactions, which means we handle the collection and remittance of US sales tax, GST, and VAT for you.
What Whop covers
When customers pay through Whop Payments, we automatically:
Figure out what taxes are needed based on where your customer lives
Collect those taxes when they check out
Remit taxes to the appropriate tax authorities
Handle US sales tax, international GST, and VAT compliance
What you’re responsible for
All other tax filings required in your jurisdiction
Handle taxes for any sales through other payment methods you might use
Report your income on your tax returns
If you use other payment processors besides Whop, you might need to handle tax collection yourself. This depends on where you and your customers are located and how much you make.
Understanding VAT for international sales
VAT (Value-Added Tax) is a tax on products and services in places like Europe, the UK, and other jurisdictions.
How VAT works on Whop
Tax rate determined by customer location: The VAT rate depends on where your customer is located, not where you’re based
Whop handles collection: As the Merchant of Record, we collect VAT from EU and UK customers
Automatic remittance: We remit collected VAT to the appropriate tax authorities on your behalf
This means you don’t need to worry about VAT when selling to international customers through Whop Payments.
